Moving Image/TV Drama

The conventions of TV Drama

TV Dramas have got identifiable and simple locations; Cafe, Pub, Living Room, Kitchen, and a workplace. The location sets the tone of the TV Drama. For Examples - Scrubs is set in a hospital therefore, the plot revolves around medical incidents.

The conventions of a British TV Drama are that it is a serialised drama that usually run week ins, weeks outs and all year round. Furthermore it has a continious narrative dealing about domestic themes, personal or family relationships. There is generally a well-known opening theme tune and intro sequences which can have slight changed over the years.
though the casts for soap operaas tend to be bigger than drama series, there is a limit to the number of characters available at any one time. This allows the soap to focus on a smaller number of characters.

The plots are open-ended and usually many storylines are featured or even interlinked in an episode. Soap episodes often begin with a 'hook' in which one or  more of the narratives froma previous episode is continued.

How are different camera shots and angles effective towards the audience?
Different camera angles and shots are effective in their own ways. Each shot or angle are represented and emphasised with the meaning behind it. For example - a high angle shot would represent the power of someone or the control over them. A close up shot is a shot into a shows the full frame of what is in it.
The different shots are effective towards the audience and the TV show as it fully tells us on what is needed to be seen. if there was a conversation going between two people in a scene, there would be a long shot or panning used. there are many in depth shots which we never realised. A deep focus and shallow focus are used very often, especially in TV drama shows as it would exaggerate the drama and the atmosphere of the scene.

REPRESENTIONAL ISSUES

ESSAY (500 words) - Representational issue of Disability - Hollyoaks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mt1qJYqdARg&feature=share&list=PLAC15C50BB775177D
In this TV drama clip of Hollyoaks, the representational issue of this clip is disability. Disability is shown in a way which we would not physically recognise, however in this clip we find out that the disability of the character spencer through verbal and slight physical disability. Firstly we find out on how spencer reacts when he is getting told off. Overall in this clip spencer is childish and slow in understanding the things around him. For example when he burnt the porridge he didn't do anything but stand and chant a few words, this highlights the struggle and what condition Spencer is in.
In this clip there are many close-ups of Spencer looking vulnerable this makes the audience sympathise towards him. The close up’s of Spencer proves to the audience that Spencer is innocent and how is facial language can be identified easily as it portrays the disability.
The high angle shots of spencer makes him seem small, inferior and weak in front of Warren. The high angle shots of Spencer makeshim seem small rather than big as he is being powered and controlled by Warren in which by means Warren has low angle shot. Furthermore Spencer has high angle shots because Spencer looks up to Warren and obeys him which highlights his simplicity and his innocence. The low angle shots of Warren makes him seen as big, superior, and more powerful compared to spencer.
The use of zoom in used for Spencer's face shows his facial expression on being cared and frightened. The use of a two shot demonstrates the relationship between Warren and Spencer.
The sound has a big impact in this clip. The diegetic sound in the background are the TV and the cars. This increases the normality and the reality of the scenes, which furthermore makes this clip more dramatic.
The dialogues in which spencer says are more childish compared to how Warren speaks. Continuing on, spencer stutters when he tries to talk which portrays the representational issue of disability being shown verbally. The way language is used in this clip is simple for Spencer, as Spencer has a childlike mind, in which he wouldn’t understand half of the things around him, this emphasises his disability and the audience sympathising towards him.

The miss-en-scene of this clip are that the props are trainers which are another aspect of showing Spencer's disability, as he is wearing casual clothing. Furthermore there are more props like kitchen utensils; like knife used in this clip. This may look dangerous in the content of Spencer's childish and carelessness which was previously shown when he burnt the porridge. Carrying on, the way Spencer sits on the sofa is also immature and ‘silly’.

His facial expression is vacant and confused which portrays his condition. Spencer's costume is another thing to bear in mind, spencer wears more colourful clothes which shows his childish mind. The toy train in which spencer had an interest in symbolises in childlike mentality. Displaying a stereotype disability, those less abled people are children.

PREZI ON MISE EN SCENE (PRIMEVAL)

Improved Essay of Representation of Disability Clip – Coming down the mountain.
(text in red are the improvements)

The first scene of this clip, David sits in his and disabled brother’s room, while the camera in zooming in from a high angle, which instantly creates a thought for the audience that David is not powerful enough or doesn’t have any dominance what so ever when it comes to looking after his brother as his voice is never heard by his parents. In the bedroom, the mise-en-scene is setting a tense atmosphere before David talks. One side of the room is dark and that is where David is sat whereas the other side is bright meaning it is Ben’s side, this is because Ben’s in a happier mood than David who is either complaining or moody. There is a big difference between the lighting as it’s trying to demonstrate the differences of the two brothers. Non-diegetic music is playing which has a cheerful tone contrasting greatly with the voice over of David who is talking negative about his brother, furthermore David tells the audience on how Ben is suffering from a disability which has not only affected Ben’s life but David’s life as well. The breaks between the voiceover reveal David’s feelings towards Ben.

The continuity editing makes the situation more realistic, the flashbacks of the events of David and Ben has got a continuity editing with visual effects of seeing through the toy gun. It leads to then an establishing shot of the council houses which portrays the location and the setting of the show. The shot is supported with non-diegetic sound of The Beach Boys ‘wouldn’t it be nice’ playing in the background. The song itself is cheerful and jolly, continuing, it turns diegetic from the radio in the kitchen and then slowly fades away.
In the kitchen, the audience are introduced to the rest of the family, mainly Ben. The close up of Ben eating Weetabix proves the disorder of Ben due to his appearance and his behaviour of bringing up the spoon mid-level. There is another close up of David giving a dirty look to Ben due to the way he is eating, and then it shifts into an eye line match and Jump cuts between David and Ben, while there is a voice over dialogue ‘you get a brother who is a big potato with eye tentacles.’ is a strong and harmful opinion of David’s. Carrying on, David’s next dialogue compares Ben and a dog which features strong language, going against disabled people; David is complaining his brother to an animal which tells us that his brother needs to be treated like a dog. The colloquial language continues when David accuses his brother on how Ben ate all the ‘bloody’ Weetabix. His mother tells him to eat another cereal and not make a big fuss, this illustrates that David receives less attention from his parents than Ben due to his disability.
David tries to steal Ben’s Weetabix and is supported by a jump cut and another close up. There is wide shot angle used to show Ben getting hugged by his mum and then exiting the scene. This depicts how disability can affect relationships between different people in the family; in this case, it’s David who didn’t get a hug from his mum.
In the next scene, Ben announces that he needs to go to the toilet. There is a transition of a jump cut of David giving a disturbed and a disgusting look and is ordered to be with Ben, as his dad doesn’t want him to make ‘another mess’, this is referencing that disabled people cannot cope by themselves, showing that everyday activities are a challenge for them. This proves that Ben has the same characteristics as animals. David is emotionally blackmailed by his dad, as he is the elder brother; he has the responsibility to keep an eye out for the younger sibling every moment which is leading to David being sick of being Ben’s carer.
The next scene shows the two brothers walking towards the bus stop. A wide angle shot is used to portray the relationship the two brothers have. Ben is walking behind David illustrating the power David has. David has got dark attire on, which shows his anger and his mood however Ben has got bright colours. Pathetic Fallacy is also used to support David’s mood as it’s raining which represents gloominess and sadness.
In the classroom, the diegetic sound of the teacher’s voice is slightly drawn back as it supports the position of the camera which is at the back. The long shot is used to show that the teacher has more power with the students; furthermore the classroom has got students cheering and talking which sets a more realistic atmosphere of a stereotypical high school lesson. The mise-en-scene of the classroom is the whiteboard, tables, chairs, the students and the typical teacher proving a student wrong.
Later on, Ben is being discriminated by a friend of David’s. His friend persuades David to come to the party and leave ben. His friend also mocks ben in saying to David that does he need to ‘babysit again’. David’s friend thinks that Ben needs care and attention just like a baby. The body language of Ben’s portrays that he is being left out of the conversation. An over the shoulder shot combined with a high and low angled shot is used to enhance the point of being excluded and the power of David.
Ben is disheartened when David makes his mind up in going to the party and leaving Ben to get home all by himself. The music played in the background to when Ben is on the bus has a slower tempo compared to The Beach Boys track, they both contrast together as the music is losing its ‘cheerful’ tone and sounding more lonely and sad, depicts the position that Ben is in currently.
In the beginning the music the audience hears is happy and cheerful and then it becomes sad towards the end, this is based on Ben’s feelings and emotions which is a big contrast from the beginning to the end of the clip.
Ben is in the bus by himself, he is holding onto the handlebars and tries to ignore what is surrounding him. The distinctive chatter of the kids in the bus in the background is heard until the voiceover of David’s starts again. The voiceover of David is telling the audience about his feelings towards Ben. The clip ends with a zoom in of ben, this has been intentionally used to make the audience think about what just happened to Ben, making the audience sympathise towards him due to the state he is currently in. Ben’s strong facial expression of looking worried was zoomed in so that the audience is more acknowledged on how he is surviving by himself without no one and also feeling upset as his brother left him even when he knew that Ben wouldn’t be able to handle going home by himself.
